Individual
Steps

As I was looking through
the hundreds of individual step photographs, searching for ones that would serve
as grounding borders for the location and view, I realized how distinctive and
beautiful many of the footsteps were on their own. Each placement, each moment
is so profoundly unique; as a group one can get a sense of the infinite diversity
of hiking in the sierras. The earlier groupings of sixteen images were still
about relationship; about the linking of moments, of trying to slow down. The
individual steps, isolating the moment, become stronger markers of time and
place. The absence of other images from the same local suggests the infinite
profusion of all of those steps that have not been documented. The viewer fills
in the jumps from snow to screen to cactus, feels the expanse of time and space.
Printed just under life size, they become journal entries consisting of both
documentation and possibility.
